Ponty Youth round off league campaign with Cowbridge win

Pontypridd Youth rounded off their league campaign on Saturday 7th May, with an away tie against Cowbridge Youth, who were winners of the Welsh Youth Cup and recognised as one of the top sides in Wales. A tough test was expected, and that proved to be the case.

From the kick off Ponty Youth showed intent and purpose forcing an early penalty at the breakdown but failing to convert that advantage into points.  Both sides displayed skill and intensity, retaining possession and going through the phases.  Cowbridge got on to the score board first with a penalty but  Ponty striking back with a try scored by Greg Mogford, who dived over from a ruck close to the line.

An exchange of penalties saw the first half ending  with Ponty leading by 6pts to 8.

The second period carried on form the first with both teams showing intent and real attacking flair, but strong defences preventing either side from getting a clear opportunity to score. The stand off was broken by Ponty as Keiron Gaye broke clear of the Cowbridge defence and set up Joe Davies to cross the line and touch down behind the posts, the try converted by Rhodri Smith.

The home team struck back quickly with a well worked try in the corner which they converted, narrowing their deficit to 11pts to 15. Both sides rang the changes as the humidity and pace of the game began to tell. With breathless passages of play scoring opportunities were created at both ends but  denied by good scramble defences.  With less than ten minutes of play left, following another attack from deep Ponty  had Caldye Mullock driven across the try line to score his side’s third try of the afternoon.

Cowbridge launched several attacks late on but a solid defensive effort keeping them out, with Ponty holding out for victory by 11pts to 20 and maintaining their 100% record in the league to end the campaign as worthy Blues A champions.

Pontypridd Youth’s next game will be the National Play-Off semi  final tie on 21st May against Nantyfyllon Youth, winners of the Ospreys League.
