Pontypridd Youth claimed the Merit Table Cup with a hard fought victory over Rhydyfelin Youth on Wednesday evening 26th April, the match played at the Penygraig RFC ground.

It was Ponty's last chance to salvage a trophy for the season and to give those players leaving for senior rugby a fitting send off for their commitment and dedication to the cause over the last three years.

From the kick off Pontypridd showed real intent playing with tempo and fluidity to put Rhyd under early pressure and forcing three quick penalty opportunities to take a 9 point lead. Rhydyfelin stuck to their guns and worked their way back into the game, winning a penalty award in a kickable position to narrow the gap.

After a breathless opening ten minutes both teams' defences came to the fore with big hits forcing turnovers and breaking up the flow of the game. Neither side could generate enough possession or pressure to take control during the remainder of the first half.

The second period followed a similar pattern but it was Ponty who got on the score board first. After a period of pressure on their opponents' line Ponty were awarded a penalty for offside at the breakdown. They opted for a quick tap penalty with back rower Gruff Lloyd scoring in the corner, the try converted by Cavan Slade.

Rhydyfelin showed their metal and from the restart put Ponty under relentless pressure, rewarded with a well worked short range try and followed up just five minutes later with a second try in the opposite corner following a turnover in mid field.

Rhyd now seemed to have Ponty on the ropes as they pressed hard for a crucial third try. It was only in the last minutes of the game that Ponty reimposed themselves as Gruff Lloyd picked up a loose ball and made one of his trade mark scything runs to score the match winning try, again converted by Cavan Slade to secure victory by 23pts to 13.

The coaches and management of Pontypridd Youth would like to wish Zack Byard, Keiran Gay, Morgan Burgess, Jordan Pritchard, Owen Lloyd and Jordan Coxley all the best as they move on to play senior rugby next season.
